Pre Filter Housing
Pre Filter Housing is an essential component in water filtration systems, designed to house pre-filters that remove larger particles and sediments from water before it enters the main filtration system. Made from durable materials like polypropylene or stainless steel, these housings are built to withstand high water pressure and long-term use. They play a crucial role in enhancing the efficiency and lifespan of downstream filters such as RO membranes or UV cartridges by preventing clogging from dirt, sand, rust, and other impurities.
What is pre-filter housing?
A Pre Filter Housing is a cylindrical plastic container designed to hold pre-filter cartridges such as sediment filters or carbon filters. It’s the first stage in a water filtration system, typically placed before the RO membrane or other filter stages.
Its main job is to house the filter element and allow water to pass through it for initial filtration — removing dirt, dust, rust, sand, and other suspended particles.

Pre Filter Housing
Step-by-Step Working of a Pre Filter Housing
1. Water Enters Through the Inlet Port
Raw water — frequently including sand, silt, rust, and other suspended matter — is fed into the pre filter housing inlet port. These ports are usually threaded (BSP type) and joined to the water line via suitable fittings.
- ✅ Inlet sizes are typically 1/4\", 1/2\", or 3/4\", depending on system capacity.
- ✅ The water is pressurized (up to 100–125 PSI in residential systems).
2. Water Passes Through the Filter Cartridge
Inside the housing, a filter cartridge is securely placed — usually a 10″ sediment filter or carbon filter. This is the core filtration element.
Here’s what happens inside:
- ✅ Sediment filters trap larger particles like sand, dirt, and rust.
- ✅ Carbon filters absorb chlorine, organic matter, and bad odors.
- ✅ The water is forced through the cartridge from outside to inside (in most designs), allowing a gradual buildup of contaminants on the outer surface while delivering cleaner water through the center.
3. Water Traverses the Filter Cartridge
Within the housing, a filter cartridge is safely positioned — typically a 10″ sediment filter or carbon filter. It’s the central filtration component.
Inside is what occurs:
- ✅ Sediment filters catch bigger particles such as sand, dirt, and rust.
- ✅ Carbon filters adsorb chlorine, organic compounds, and unpleasant odors.
The water is pushed through the cartridge from the outside to the inside (in the majority of designs), enabling a progressive accumulation of impurities on the outer surface but providing cleaner water through the center.
4. Filtered Water Expels Through the Outlet Port
Once it has gone through the filter cartridge, the purified water comes out of the housing via the outlet port. It then travels on to the second stage of filtration — usually an activated carbon filter or straight into the RO membrane.
This helps prevent sensitive parts such as the RO membrane from being subject to large particulates or chemicals that may shorten its lifespan or affect efficiency.
Internal Design Features that Contribute to Filtration
O-Ring Seal
- ✅ Located in the head/cap of the housing.
- ✅ Facilitates a leak-proof seal when closing the housing.
- ✅ Protects against water bypassing the filter cartridge.
- ✅Cartridge Holding Mechanism
A guiding rib or central spindle can be provided to support the cartridge in an upright position and to prevent its shifting caused by water pressure.
Some housings have a bottom drain plug used for flushing sediments or draining water prior to replacement of the cartridges.
